Monastery of Sant Sebastià dels Gorgs

Avinyonet del Penedés

With a thousand years of history, Sant Sebastià dels Gorgs is proof of a time of agricultural prosperity, closely linked with the tithes from the land. Its founder, Mir Geribert, intended it as the great abbey of the Penedès. Visit it and discover more.

This was a pre-Romanesque church from the second half of the 10th century, which from 1030 to 1821 housed a Benedictine priory. In 1409 it was disassociated from the monastery of Victor of Marseilles and became part of Montserrat. It is an excellent example of Romanesque art, the result of a period of feudalism in a region that was the frontier with the County of Barcelona and of a period of considerable conflict between the nobility and the church. It has been a parish church since 1867.
